The “Baby Bar” exam covers three subjects: contracts, criminal law and torts. A passing score displays that the student is proficient in these first-year subjects. The State Bar of California states that “an answer based upon legal theories and principles of general applicability is sufficient; detailed knowledge of California Law is not required.” At Open Book Bar Prep we sharpen and train your mind to concentrate on how the law functions.
The Baby Bar is a one-day exam with four essays and 100 multiple-choice questions. Applicants receive four hours to complete the essay portion of the exam and three hours to answer the multiple-choice questions. The exam is administered twice a year: June and October. The exam is graded as follows: - A passing scaled score is 560 points or higher
- The multiple-choice score is based upon exact number of items answered correctly
- Multiple-Choice
- Multiple-choice raw scores are converted to a 400-point scale
- This adjusts for variances in difficulty between different exams
- An applicant’s score should not be affected by the difficulty of the exam
- Essays
- The raw score on an essay ranges from 40 to 100 points
- This raw score is converted to a 400-point scale
- This adjusts for variances in difficulty between different exams
- An applicant’s score should not be effected by the difficulty of the exam
- The essay scores (after conversion) range between 160 and 400 points
- Total Score
- The total score is the sum of the applicant’s converted scores on the multiple-choice and essay sections
- Both sections of the exam hold equal weight
- First Reading
- To pass the exam after one reading by a Baby Bar grader the applicant must have a scaled score of 560 or above
- If the scaled score is 540 but less than 560 after the first reading, the exam is sent to reappraisal
- Someone from Examination Development and the Grading Team will review the exam and determine if the content is worthy of passing
